What is Curious George doing on Elizabeth Jean? What could he be looking for? Well if he is like us he is reading The Stars A New Way to See Them by H.A Rey, Curious George’s creator. The Stars is a easy to follow guide to the heavens. On night passages we often take The Stars above decks to help us sort out the cosmic light show overhead.
Rey’s interest in astronomy began during World War I and led to his desire to redraw constellation diagrams, which he found difficult to remember, so that they were more intuitive. This led to the 1952 publication of The Stars: A New Way to See Them. His constellation diagrams were adopted widely and now appear in many astronomy guides.
This page superimposes his constellation drawings on an image of the night sky.
These examples shows the traditional drawing on the left and Rey’s revision on the right. Mo bettah, wouldn’t you say?
